Which documents are concerned?
All types of official documents, such as:
- civil status records (birth, marriage and death certificates);
- court documents (judgments, certificates of non-appeal and all kinds of certificates issued by the judicial authorities, such as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as well as by court registries);
- contracts and the various instruments relating to the management of assets (sale, lease, gift…);
- documents and extracts from public registers (land register, industrial property register…);
- school and university diplomas;
- medical certificates.
Which authority is competent to validate the document?
- Notaries, if you intend to present the document to an authority of a country that is a signatory to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, concluded at The Hague on 5 October 1961.
- The consular authorities of the country in which you are going to present the document, if that country is not a party to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, concluded at The Hague on 5 October 1961.
